After the coaches tabbed the Longhorns as the nation's top team last week, Texas was voted as the No. 1 team in the first AP Poll of the campaign released Monday. Since 2000, only USC and Alabama have won the national championship after starting the season ranked first.
Texas received 25 first-place votes and 1,552 points to give the Southeastern Conference the preseason No. 1 team for a record fifth straight year. The Nittany Lions got 23 first-place votes and 1,547 points for their highest preseason ranking since they were No. 1 to open the 1997 season.
On Monday, the AP released its rankings, culled from sportswriters around the country and signaling the imminent arrival of college football. Occupying its highest preseason ranking ever is Texas, which is looking to build off a season in which it beat Arizona State in the Peach Bowl before losing to Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.
COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M football enters the 2025 season 19th in the initial AP Top 25 poll. Unranked after the 2024 season, the Aggies are one of the 10 SEC teams ranked in the first poll of 2025. Last week, A&M was ranked 21st in the initial US LBM Coaches Poll.
