Romania is falling even more in turmoil after one election official touted at a potential rerun of the first round of presidential elections after a shocking result that allegedly was engineered with foreign interference.

With less than two weeks to go before Romania votes on its next President, the country's Constitutional Court has ordered a recount of the first round votes after Elena Lasconi's Union Save Romania Party was accused of breaking campaign rules.

The recount was ordered by Romania's Constitutional Court. Far-right populist Calin Georgescu won the first round of the presidential election and was set to go against centrist Elena Lasconi in a December runoff.

Romania's top court on Thursday ordered a recount of votes in the first round of the presidential election and the country's top security body warned Romania was a key target for hostile actions from Russia after a shock result in the ballot.

Georgescu’s campaign was buoyed by an outsize following on TikTok, propelling him to first place after he’d been trailing in single digits only a week before the Nov. 24 contest. The result upended Romanian politics as voters prepare for a parliamentary election on Sunday. They’ll vote again in a presidential runoff on Dec. 8.
