After the first Ebola death in Uganda in years, a senior health official says authorities in the African nation are "in full control of the situation."

Uganda is racing to launch a trial Ebola vaccine after a deadly outbreak in Kampala claimed a nurse’s life. With no approved vaccine for the Sudan strain, officials are accelerating research and regulatory approvals.

In its last outbreak, more than two years ago, Uganda saw 164 cases and 55 confirmed deaths from Ebola. Uganda announced Thursday that a nurse, 32, had died of Ebola in the capital, Kampala, amid a new outbreak of the deadly virus there — the first in two years.

Uganda has had access to candidate vaccine doses since the end of an Ebola outbreak in September 2022 that killed at least 55 people. Ugandan officials ran out of time to begin a vaccine study when that outbreak, in central Uganda, was declared over about four months later, Kaleebu said.

A nurse in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, died after testing positive for Ebola, a health official said Thursday, in the first recorded fatality since the last outbreak ended in 2023.

Sudan Ebola was first identified in Sudan in 1976. Other outbreaks have occurred in Uganda (2000, 2012, 2022) and South Sudan.

The index case sought treatment at Mulago in Kampala, Saidina Abubakar Islamic Hospital in Matugga in Wakiso District, and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in Mbale City, as well as from a traditional healer (witch doctor).

Health authorities say they've identified at least 44 contacts of the deceased, including 30 hospital staff and patients.

A day after Uganda's Ministry of Health announced a new Ebola outbreak in the capital, Kampala, most Ugandans appeared unaware or unconcerned about the outbreak and went about their business normally.
