The annual Thanksgiving holiday travel rush is underway as tens of millions hit the road and head to airports, but severe weather is already having an impact on travel plans across the country. Record rain in Northern California has triggered flooding and mudslides and parts of the Northeast are digging out of heavy snowfall.

The early forecast for Thanksgiving from the National Weather Service in Buffalo calls for a chance of rain and snow showers, with a high of 39 degrees. The chance of precipitation sits around 40%. Rochester is still waiting on its first flake of the season; the previous record for latest first flake was Nov. 20, set in 1918.

This year’s Thanksgiving weekend is expected to be the busiest air travel weekend in American history, according to the Transportation Security Administration. Approximately 18.3 million people are expected to clear TSA checkpoints between Nov.
