The fate of an Osceola County sheriff’s deputy accused of igniting a gasoline fire with a stun gun that severely burned a man he was trying to arrest will soon rest with the jury Friday after a weeklong trial in which he testified the incident was an accident.

The Osceola County deputy who was accused of deploying his Taser on a gas-covered man in 2022 — igniting a blaze that seriously burned the victim — was found not guilty of negligence on Friday after a weeklong trial.

In addition to arguing the discharge was accidental, the defense has suggested that either Koffinas’ discharge or the hot engine of Barreto’s dirt bike may have ignited the gasoline. Koffinas was not criminally charged and received a 40-hour suspension after an internal investigation.

The jury took six hours, right on the nose in their deliberations. The decision was far from clear-cut. The story is also far from over. Deputy David Crawford is not guilty of misdemeanor culpable negligence.
