As Israel and Hezbollah cease fire after a year, President Biden says Palestinians in war-torn Gaza also "deserve an end of the fighting and displacement."

A ceasefire brokered by the Biden administration has been reached between Israel and Hezbollah, potentially bringing lasting peace to the region as the war in Gaza continues.

Biden spoke about his hopes for a ceasefire in Gaza after he announced the deal achieved between Israel and Lebanon yesterday.

Under the terms of the deal, Israel will gradually withdraw from Lebanon, while Hezbollah isn’t allowed to rebuild near the border. But will the ceasefire hold?

The agreement with Lebanon will maintain Israel's freedom of operation there to act in defence to remove threats posed by Hezbollah and enable displaced residents to return safely to their homes in northern Israel, Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer told Reuters.

Under the agreement, Israeli troops would retreat from southern Lebanon while Hezbollah would move its forces further away from the Israeli-Lebanon border.
