The catastrophic Southern California wildfires, combined with winter storms and the presidential inauguration, have put an understandable damper on the latest leg of awards season, with most of this year’s Oscar contenders stepping back from the usual campaigning in recent weeks.

The film academy had plenty of surprise nominations Thursday for the 97th Oscars. The 2025 show is one of the more wide-open fields in recent history.

Sebastian Stan’s Trump portrayal is also rewarded after the film had a hard time getting distribution, while Marianne Jean-Baptiste was overlooked.

Oscars snubs for stars including Angelina Jolie and Daniel Craig - Nicole Kidman, Selena Gomez and Denzel Washington were among the others who missed out.

Several stars were snubbed for the forthcoming awards show, which is set to take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

In a crowded field of potential acting nominees, many big names and winners of other awards were shut out Thursday from the Academy Award nominations — and one made Oscars history.
