The United Arab Emirates has detained the son of the late spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood movement following his extradition from Lebanon, state media reported Friday.

Abdulrahman al-Qaradawi, who is an outspoken critic of Egypt’s government who had been residing in Turkey, reportedly visited Syria to join celebrations after the downfall of President Bashar Assad in a lightning insurgent offensive headed by the Islamist group Hayat Tahriri al-Sham.

The Lebanese government said Tuesday it has decided to grant an Emirati request to hand over Egyptian opposition activist Abdul Rahman al-Qaradawi, son of the late spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Al-Qaradawi's legal troubles stem from a 2017 conviction in Egypt. Lebanese authorities interrogated him about this verdict and an extradition request from the UAE. His arrest followed a widely shared video where he criticised authorities in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt while walking around Damascus' Umayyad Mosque.
