The Chicago Bears took on the Detroit Lions in a Thanksgiving matchup at Ford Field. The Lions came in as one of the best teams in the NFL and the Bears were trying to break a five-game losing streak.

The Chicago Bears have been one of the biggest laughingstocks in the the NFL this year and that continued when they found a mind-boggling way to lose to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving. The Chicago Bears fired former head coach Matt Eberflus on Friday morning, but not until he had already participated in a press conference just hours before his ouster.

The Chicago Bears will get a head start on their search for a new head coach, but who will be among the prime candidates for the job?

Chicago Bears president Kevin Warren said Ryan Poles will remain the general manager and serves as the point person in the search for a head coach to replace the fired Matt Eberflus.

While the Detroit Lions didn't play Sunday, they did remain atop the NFC standings and still share the best record in the entire league. Detroit, which played on Thanksgiving, broke a seven-game holiday slide and edged the Chicago Bears, 23-20. The Lions hadn't won on Thanksgiving since 2016.

Paschal and Reader, specifically, have been two of the Lions' best run defenders on the line of scrimmage this season. In two games without Paschal earlier this year — one of them being against Green Bay — Detroit gave up an average yards per carry of 4.9 (vs. Tennessee, 158 rush yards allowed) and 6.0 (vs. Green Bay, 138 allowed).

If Poles gets it wrong on the next coach, they’re probably leaving together. That possibility presents something he and Kevin Warren must navigate with coaching candidates who will be cautious about stepping into the instability of potentially mismatched timelines.
