World Trade Organization chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was reappointed for a second term at a special meeting on Friday, the trade watchdog said, meaning her tenure will coincide with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's second administration.

World Trade Organization chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is expected to be reappointed Friday for a second term, in the shadow of the coming return of Donald Trump and his disdain for international trade rules.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will serve a second term as director-general of the World Trade Organization beginning next year. The Biden administration had expressed concern over the expedited election process.

Iweala, who was reappointed Friday for a second term running the World Trade Organization, said she looked forward to working with Donald Trump, while insisting on the importance of rules-based global trading.

The World Trade Organization has announced the reappointment of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second four-year term. Her second term will commence on September 1 next year, following a unanimous consensus by the WTO's General Council.
