West Virginia National Guard troops have begun to arrive in Washington, DC, to assist with President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown in the nation’s capital, a defense official told CNN on Tuesday.

Six states send National Guard troops to Washington as Trump deploys soldiers to combat crime, and federalizes Metropolitan Police Department.

"While federal assistance gives us a boost, we must repeal the misguided Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Act in order to make these changes permanent," the union said

The U.S. Marshals shared on Tuesday that they are offering a $500 reward for tips that lead to an arrest in D.C. during the federal takeover.

Trump administration reports 465 total arrests and 68 guns seized in Washington, D.C., federal policing operation, with nearly half occurring in high-crime areas.

The deployment of troops began last week when Trump declared a "crime emergency" in Washington and initiated the takeover of the D.C. police department.

About 45% of violent crime is not reported to the police, according to 2023 NCVS data. Reasons for not reporting include fear of retribution, belief that police won’t be able to help and not wanting to get the offender in trouble.

The FBI has released its latest data, revealing that over 14 million crimes were reported in 2024. The FBI’s crime statistics estimates, based on reported data.
