Despite rising fears about immigration enforcement, the Cinco de Mayo festival is back along Portland’s waterfront. The holiday commemorates the Mexican victory in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is mostly celebrated in America.

Monday is Cinco De Mayo, a day commemorating the Battle of Puebla, delighting in the triumph of Mexican heritage.

Cinco de Mayo marks the anniversary of the 1862 victory by Mexican troops over invading French forces at the Battle of Puebla. The triumph over the better-equipped and much larger French troops was an enormous emotional boost for Mexican soldiers led by Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza.
