The goalie returns to Pittsburgh after being placed on waivers Jan. 15 and assigned to the AHL once he cleared. Joel Blomqvist, a 23-year-old rookie goalie, was sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in a corresponding move after allowing six goals on 33 shots in the Penguins’ 6-5 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs on Sunday.

Toronto has been one of the hottest teams in hockey, while San Jose has been the worst with eight straight losses, sporting a -16 goal differential in that span. The Leafs have also been victorious in four of the last five meetings between the two.

Sharks rookie Macklin Celebrini suffered a lower-body injury on Saturday and is questionable for San Jose's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday.

Struggling through another awful season, the Sharks could be on the verge of shedding several additional players.

NHL trade season is well underway. There have been significant trades going back to the fall but the “trade season” really kicked off in a big way in late January when the Colorado Avalanche shocked the hockey world by trading Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes.

For a few reasons, it’s going to be a notable week ahead in the NHL. Not only are we down to the final 20-or-so games for each team, but the trade deadline is less than a week away.
