A jury in Michigan is struggling to reach a verdict in the murder trial of a police officer who shot a Congolese immigrant after a routine traffic stop.

A Michigan police officer who killed a man with a shot to the back of the head testified in his own defense Friday, telling jurors at his second-degree murder trial that he was “running on fumes” and fearing for his life after losing his Taser during an intense fight.

Former Grand Rapids police Officer Christopher Schurr is on trial in the death of Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Congolese immigrant who was shot and killed by the officer three years ago.
