Known as a fierce tenants' rights advocate and the first woman elected to serve as president of City Council, Mary Pat Clarke died on Sunday, November 10, according to sources close to her.

Mary Pat is one of the main reasons that my wife, Karen, and I moved to Baltimore. We are both from the San Francisco Bay Area in California. We planned on going back home after graduation from the University of Maryland School of Social Work.

Family, friends and Baltimore residents gathered Saturday morning to remember the life of Mary Pat Clarke. Clarke died at the age of 83. She was first elected to represent the 2nd District from 1975-83 before her election as the council's first female president from 1987-95.
