The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a warning of significant rainfall in Kerala due to cyclone Fengal, currently positioned as a strong low-pressure area over northern Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, the district administrations declared a holiday for all educational institutions including professional colleges and anganwadi in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Wayanad districts on Monday.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Kerala due to Cyclone Fengal, with neighboring states on orange alert. Heavy rainfall is expected, prompting educational institutions to close and authorities to advise evacuations in vulnerable areas.

According to the IMD, the La Niña effect is expected to impact northern India, including the plains of Punjab and Delhi, bringing cooler-than-usual sea surface temperatures across the central and eastern Pacific.

The IMD predicted light to moderate rainfall in some areas, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall expected on Sunday. The Kerala SDMA has advised people living in low-lying, landslide-prone, and other such areas to relocate to safer places.

The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in the northern districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur.
