Minnesotans spend on average 4.87% of their income on health insurance, ranking 47th, the study shows. The next states whose residents pay the least are Virginia at 4.85%, Maryland at 4.27% and New Hampshire at 4.02%.
The GOP's so-called "big beautiful bill" cut taxes in many ways, but didn't extend a tax break that lowered health insurance premiums for millions of people.
"Traditional Medicare has roughly 20% cost-sharing," Sommers said. "For people who have both Medicaid and Medicare, Medicaid covers those costs. Also, traditional Medicare has no out-of-pocket cap, meaning someone can rack up tens of thousands of dollars of costs if they have a catastrophic illness, which Medicaid would cover if they have both."
The study found that people in Vermont spent the most on health insurance as a percentage of their income. The average Vermonter shelled out nearly 20% of their income on health insurance premiums. For comparison, residents of neighboring New Hampshire only spent an average of 4% of their income on insurance, according to the data.
The tax and spending legislation will bring in nearly $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid as well as a number of other changes such as work requirements.
