Google is working to update its map system to reflect Canada's "provincial park" designations, removing "state park" designations for the country.

On the Google Maps Help page, where users can post questions and concerns, one person with the username Louise N wrote that provincial parks are being “incorrectly listed as State parks” on Feb. 22. She added that “we do not have states in Canada” and asked, “How can this be fixed?”

The categorization pre-dates 51st state rhetoric but is getting fresh attention with concerns over sovereignty. The categorization is also used by other services including Bing and TripAdvisor.

Canadians have taken to social media wondering why Google Maps is referring to some provincial parks as “state” parks, an incorrect designation that’s ruffling feathers at a time of heightened tension between Canada and the United States.

Google says it's working to relabel Canadian provincial parks on its maps services after Canadians raised concerns about sovereignty.

“We have not made any recent changes to the way we label parks in Canada – the vast majority of these parks have had their existing labels for several years. We're actively working to update labels for parks in Canada to avoid confusion,” a Google spokesperson tells V.I.A. via email.
