The Federal Reserve voted to leave its short-term interest rate unchanged as expected, despite mounting pressure from President Donald Trump to lower them.

On Wednesday, Trump seized on a report showing the economy expanded at a 3% annual rate in the second quarter as evidence that growth is accelerating and called on Powell to cut rates. Yet the Fed typically reduces borrowing costs when the economy is faltering and threatening to send unemployment higher.

Fed governors Michelle Bowman and Christopher Waller, who have signaled support for easing interest rates in recent weeks, voted against holding interest rates at their current level, marking the first double dissent by Fed board members since 1993.
