AUSTIN — Texas announced Thursday that it will not hold a spring football game for the first time in head coach Steve Sarkisian’s four-year Longhorn tenure. Sarkisian made the announcement on a football podcast and cited the wear and tear of two consecutive long seasons as the reason for the cancellation.

College football's annual rite of spring seems to be withering. Texas became the latest major program Thursday to ditch or change it's annual spring scrimmage that has long been a staple for fans eager to see the rising stars of their program and get a peek into the upcoming season.

If Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian doesn't want to play a spring game, more power to him. But the Horns would be wise to still meet their fans.
