Hundreds gathered in downtown Portland’s South Park Blocks Thursday afternoon for a May Day protest pushing back on federal policies and President Donald Trump. By 1:45 p.m., at least 400 demonstrators were gathered near Portland State University listening to amplified speeches and carrying signs decrying the federal job cuts under the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency.

The international event, which commemorates the fight for workers’ rights, has often been used to express broader political unrest. This year, President Donald Trump and his administration’s actions are front and center.

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of downtown Portland on Wednesday for May Day, also known as International Workers Day, joining worldwide marches to demand stronger labor protections, livable wages and immigrant rights.
