Poland is beginning spot checks at its shared border with Germany, with random checks being carried out from Monday onwards at a total of 52 border crossings, authorities say. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the temporary border checks at the start of July in response to stricter German controls at the shared border.

Poland will deploy 5,000 soldiers to its borders to stop Germany from sending back failed asylum seekers. Poland’s general staff said the units would be stationed at the borders of Germany and Lithuania from Monday to check vehicles for refugees. Surveillance drones operated by the Polish air force may also monitor the area.

Warsaw has accused Berlin of breaching EU principles by offloading responsibility for failed asylum seekers who had originally crossed into Germany from Polish territory.
