A prosecutor has asked Brazil's Supreme Court to find ex-president Jair Bolsonaro guilty of plotting a violent coup after a trial that saw President Trump try to intervene.

The Trump administration launched a trade investigation against Brazil on Tuesday, just one week after blasting Brasília for its treatment of ally former President Jair Bolsonaro. The trade investigation ostensibly regards unfair trade practices.

A prosecutor asked Brazil's Supreme Court on Tuesday to find ex-president Jair Bolsonaro guilty of plotting a coup, in closing arguments after a trial that saw US President Donald Trump try to intervene on behalf of his right-wing ally.

Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro is facing charges for allegedly trying to overturn the country's 2022 election and destabilise nation's democracy. The chief prosecutor asked the Supreme Court to find Bolsonaro guilty of inciting an insurrection.

"I’ll be watching the WITCH HUNT of Jair Bolsonaro, his family, and thousands of his supporters, very closely," Trump stated. "The only Trial that should be happening is a Trial by the Voters of Brazil — It’s called an Election." The one area where Trump and Bolsonaro differ is in their pre-politics past.

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of being the main actor behind "the most serious actions to destroy the democratic constitutional order," according to an indictment. A 517-page document from Brazil's Attorney General's Office,
