We arrived at 9am and waited for about an hour and a half in the vehicle queue to get through security at Stallion Gate. This isn't a complaint, just an FYI. Another FYI - there are no restrooms in… Full review by Scott S

We plan to stay in Albuquerque and visit Trinity site on Sat Oct 6, 2019. I have heard that the entry gate to the Trinity site is 120 miles from Albuquerque, and a lady at the visitors bureau in Albuquerque says it takes 3-5 hours to make the drive. Which gate do we line up at, and how long does the drive from Albuquerque take? Do we have to be at the gate by 8 am or are there multiple caravans that are escorted to the Trinity site? I have heard that the site is open until 2 pm. Do we have to all leave in a caravan, or can we leave when we are done looking?

If you are coming from Albuquerque, there is no “caravan.” The Stallion Gate opens at 8 am — it takes about 1.5 hours to get there from Albuquerque (enter “Stallion Range Access Center” into Google Maps). I arrived during the April visit at 7:15 am and found about 75 cars ahead of me. The gate opened on time and I was actually driving through it around 8:15 (all cars were stopped for a basic security screening — bring a picture ID, but don’t bring weapons). From there it is about another 20 minute drive to the Trinity Site. You do the 20 minute drive to the monument unescorted, but there are security personnel along the drive blocking off some roads and directing you the way you want to go. You can arrive at any time before final entry and proceed to the site. You can leave whenever you are ready — I recommend about two hours for the Trinity Site and nearby McDonald Ranch. I recommend you time tour visit, however, so that you are NOT at the site from around 10:00 - 12:30. This is when the caravan from Alamogordo arrives and dumps five hundred additional people into the site. It quickly becomes a mad house. The caravan leaves for Alamogordo at 12:30.
How early do they allow visitors to start lining up at the San Antonio gate? I'm debating lining up or getting a room the night before. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I arrived at 7:15 am after a 1.5 hour drive from Albuquerque and found about 75 cars ahead of me. The gate opened on time and after a basic security screening (checking photo ID, verifying no weapons in my car), I was driving onto the site around 8:15. There’s no need to arrive super early.
