WEBSep 14, 2009 · Minwax does an Ebony. There's Black milk paint that can be thinned to allow grain to show. Or get some lamp black from a paint store and mix into clear poly or brushing lacquer. The vinegar and steel wool ebonizing fluid only works well on woods with a lot of tannin, but you can always wet the wood with cold tea first to add tannin.

I was looking at purchasing a commercial overhead collection system for ~ $350 but wasn't impressed that they are mostly 3" mains with an even smaller guard/collection head. Another thing I didn't like was having to run another hose to the overhead.

WEBSep 25, 2011 · A few more thoughts and perhaps summarize all of the above suggestions :) The most effective way to "stain" maple a dark color is by spraying a fast drying solvent based stain such as Woodsong. I then spray either a sanding sealer or a first coat of clear post cat lacquer followed by a light sanding.
